Earthworms are vital for soil health: Earthworms are known as “ecosystem engineers” as they play a crucial role in maintaining healthy soil. They burrow through the soil, aerating and loosening it, which allows water and nutrients to penetrate deeper, and also increases root growth and soil fertility.

Earthworms can regenerate: If an earthworm is cut in half, the two pieces can sometimes regenerate into two separate worms. However, not all species of earthworms can do this, and it’s important to note that cutting a worm in half can be harmful and should not be done intentionally.

Earthworms breathe through their skin: Unlike humans, earthworms don’t have lungs. Instead, they breathe through their skin, which needs to be kept moist for them to survive. This is why they are usually found in moist soil and can even drown if the soil becomes too wet.

Earthworms are hermaphrodites: Earthworms have both male and female reproductive organs, which means they can fertilize and be fertilized by another worm during mating. However, they still need to mate with another worm to reproduce, as they can’t fertilize themselves.

Earthworms have a “brain”: Earthworms have a simple nervous system, which consists of a small brain and several nerve cords that run the length of their body. They can sense light and vibrations, and also have a rudimentary sense of smell.

Earthworms can live for a long time: Some species of earthworms can live up to 6–10 years, which is relatively long for a small invertebrate. However, their lifespan depends on factors such as habitat, diet, and temperature.

Earthworms are good indicators of soil health: Because earthworms are so important for soil health, their presence (or absence) can be a good indicator of the overall health of an ecosystem. In fact, some farmers and gardeners use earthworms as a “canary in the coal mine” to gauge the health of their soil. So next time when you come by these friends, do not throw them away. Let them do their job so that we get better quality food fresh from the garden. Let’s plant life, Plant hope and save earth.
